Tiring of me moping about the house one summer sans project, my wife suggested "Why don't you write down the stories you love to tell. Don't worry about getting published. Have fun!" Begun grudgingly, the project totally absorbed me within a week. These were not just stories, they were the seminal events that shaped my life as educator and community engaged sociologist. More than a decade later, it seems to me they may be more than this. They also provide glimpses of the hidden workings of society. Like one of the blind questions in the Parable of the Elephant, it privileges me, therefore, humbly to offer my sensations of it as pieces of the puzzle that is our culture.

Deep Photographs The Education of a Sociologist eBook David Weiner

I grew up hearing and at times, first hand experiencing, the stories put to paper in the pages of this book. However, we all have our own subjective views of experiences that make them more personal and less...shall we say, sociological. It's not easy growing up with a sociology professor as a father, especially one as socially active as my father David Weiner was and continues to be. Try watching Different Strokes with him in the room and you'd hear him heckling from the peanut gallery, "they are exploiting that poor boy, this is a minstrel show not a sitcom", we didn't appreciate it at the time, but it shaped how I took things in and analyzed data that was being flashed before my impressionable eyes. Reading these "snap shots" as he has laid them out here in his book, Deep Photographs: The Education of a Sociologist , not only helped me to view these events objectively but seemed almost new and fresh as though I was just hearing them for the first time and laughing out loud.
I have to admit that I am inclined to agree with the implications Dr. Weiner makes regarding his observations on race and social class in the united states, you may not, but you will enjoy debating him in your mind,(or in the comment section), about his conclusions.
A very enjoyable thought provoking read.

Deep Photographs The Education of a Sociologist eBook David Weiner Reviews

This book reveals a world of student pecking orders, on-taskers v off-taskers, hard paddling v soft paddling teachers, and in-school v off-school bad boys. Chilling is Weiner's realization that the parents of many students prefer a curriculum of religious piety to one of science. This is an autobiographical exposition of institutional anti-intellectualism, a critique of society's requirement that its denizens engage in self censorship, especially the social scientist.
Dr. David Weiner has written a moving account of how a richly varied life has shaped his outlook and practice as a sociologist. From teaching in an American high school to corporate employment to serving in the Israeli military, he continually has let experience inform his understanding. Sense of humor about himself allows insight to come in, while standing up for significant principles sometimes creates sobering consequences. This book is moving testimony about a life well lived by a human being who is not afraid to be human, by a social activist who is not afraid to speak out and vote with his actions. There is much to enjoy and much to admire in the book Dr. Weiner has written. Enjoy!
As a high school teacher, David Weiner's, Deep Photographs The Education of a Sociologist, has been of more value to my understanding of adolescents and pedagogy than any other book I've read in my 35 year interest in education.
Dr. Weiner weaves a variety of real life characters through his 250 page narrative in an endeavor to document the way institutions turn individual human relations into back-stabbing, brown-nosing power struggles. His characters are as diverse as high school students, Russians, Bedouins, the KKK, radicals and red necks, policeman, Israelis, and corporate executives. Dr. Weiner is both a teacher and a learner in the process, and while his story takes place in many different circumstances, it inevitably returns to the classroom.
Utilizing the Socratic Method, Dr. Weiner records what happens when a teacher treats adolescents with respect and confronts them with the truth; a teaching strategy that has turned many a chaotic classroom into a genuine learning environment and many an apathetic youth into a life-time learner.
What is constant though out Dr. Weiner's narrative is a profound sense of humanity and an unyielding quest for truth; a deep sociological truth; a deep photograph of humanity.
Deep Photographs The Education of a Sociologist, is a valuable tool for the teacher, parent , youth minister, social worker, police officer and corporate cog - really anyone who is involved in interpersonal dynamics -even teens.
I am currently reading Deep Photographs to juniors and seniors in high school who find the truths it bares about teenagers eye opening ,empowering, and worthy of critical self examination. They are captivated.
