I selected this free download because of the title. Because I am a "rat person" I am interested in all things "ratty" and this title sounded interesting. Despite his approval of rat pits, of which I heartily disapprove, I ended up admiring the rat-catcher, Ike Matthews, because of his genuine humanity toward the animals he both works with (dogs and ferrets) and catches. Many of his observations have been likewise observed by rat people, and his very first statement about never ever using poison to try to kill rats is the exact advice that any sensible person would offer today, and for the same reason. One never knows where the poison will end up. Mr. Matthews's anecdotes about some of his adventures on the job and his justifiable pride in his work, make this small book a delightful read. The glimpse into 19th century England is an added plus.My one quibble is that in one section he described a certain group of rats as "dirty". All the rats he described are in fact clean in that they groom many times each day, and if some live in less than clean surroundings that is because that is where they find food and shelter. The rats whom the rat-catcher must try to eliminate have all learned that habitation with humans is greatly beneficial because humans are messy and provide all kinds of food and shelter for rats. Were humans less accommodating rats would have less reason to show up. If anyone has watched "Subway Rat With Pizza", you will know what I mean. I wonder how Mr. Matthews would have reacted to that video.

Enjoyable book. I read it on a plane ride and thought it was a worthy read.
I picked this up at Oliver Cromwell's house on a visit to the UK a few years ago; but just got around to reading it. It is far more interesting that I thought it would be. This book gives a historical perspective that I never realized even existed and is partially biographical, partly practical, and comes across as a statement by a man who really cared about his profession. There are grizzly portions to get though, but I think anyone interested in the social history of the industrial age will get a lot out of this. Enjoy.
An amazingly lucid and well written account of a small slice of life in urban and rural England in the late 19th century.
This is certainly interesting and puts some insight into the life of a Victorian-Era ratcatcher. It is a short work and worthwhile. There are some parts that seem far fetched, and I remember Brian Plummer called some of these out in his work, "Tales Of A Rat Hunting Man". There is something romantic about the piece that makes it a bit of a classic despite its shortcomings.
Great read in a subject area that most of us wish we never had to consider. Old fashioned methods of a professional, and Terminex and other modern companies could learn a great deal. As strange as it might seem, this was well written, witty, and informative. There were actually a couple of ideas which worked when nothing else had, including paying modern professionals a fortune for failure. But to learn methods, you must buy the book in order to reward the publisher who keeps this available. No, I have no connection to publisher I was just a desperate frustrated person sharing too much of my home with rodents.
I've said for a long time that for any but the most menial career fields, it is interesting to hear someone experienced talk about the problems and challenges of job. This book bears that out.
The book is extremely short, and I was a bit disappointed to see that it isn't the accounts of specific days on the job, dealing with strange characters or particular quirky circumstances that I'd expected. Instead this is mostly a "how to" book on how to catch rats according to best practices of mid-19th Century England. It is well-written and readable, unlike many how-to books. There are some bits of color, such as describing the author's confrontation with a company board over the price he wanted to charge--He finally offered a five pound note to any of the gentlemen of the board who would spend the next evening with him crawling around under the floorboard of the building placing rat traps and removing them. Nobody took him up on his offer.
I read this book on my --Note that the formatting on the one dollar edition is awful, the line length is too long for the and you alternate between a full-length line on the followed by a short stub of a line that fills out the original line length. The book is short enough that this can be put up with for the hour or so it will take you to read the book.
